Music Choices

Couples often ask for my advice when they are choosing their music so here are some tips and things to consider.

Pre-ceremony:

  • What kind of vibe do you want to create?
Calm and relaxed? We can perform some slow contemporary and jazz or light classical.
Get the party started? We will stick to upbeat pop.
Music from the early years of your relationship? You can browse songs by decade here.

  • What music will help the groom feel calm?

Processional:

For many, this is the most important piece of music. Some couples have known what they want for years. Others have no idea, but want it to be perfect.

  • Do you have a special song? If not, what’s the first song you danced to as a couple?

  • Is there a song or band/artist you both love?

  • Is there a movie, TV show or game you both love? We can play something from the soundtrack. We have performed the Game of Thrones theme song more than once!

  • Maybe a song where the lyrics align with your idea of love or friendship?

  • Or a song that’s an inside joke for you. (I’m still waiting for someone to choose Dear Future Husband for their processional)

Signing of the Register:

Again, think about the atmosphere you want to create. A lot of couples choose understated songs or classical music. Others choose songs with meaning, such as Signed, Sealed, Delivered!

  • Do you want the music to entertain your guests while you sign or fade into the background as they socialise?

  • Do you want to get your guests into party mode or keep them calm?

  • If you’re not sure about the questions above, what are some of your favourite songs you’d like the listen to?

Recessional:

This is when you walk back down the aisle together as a couple for the first time. Most people choose something upbeat, but one couple requested Wake Me Up by Evanescence. It’s your day, so choose the music YOU want.

  • Do you want an upbeat, happy song or something more sedate and romantic?

  • Any more favourite songs?

  • What about something with thematic meaning, such as I’ll Be There For You from Friends?

Post-ceremony:

You will probably be busy being congratulated, hugging your friends and family, and taking beautiful photos while we are playing. Most couples choose happy music, to reflect your emotions. You can choose specific songs or tell us your favourite genre and artists.

  • Assuming you want happy music, do you want upbeat, slow or a mix?

  • Who are your favourite artists

  • What sort of music do your guests like? Should we play some ABBA for your parents?

Choosing ceremony music can be overwhelming, so hopefully this has helped you organise your thoughts and narrow your choices. I am always happy to be a sounding board and give advice. My number one piece of advice is always “What’s your favourite music?”
